More Violent Crimes Being Committed in Camden, NJ
Violent crime in Camden NJ continues to be a major problem, with law enforcement officials reporting that the murder rate in 2016 is significantly higher than the murder rate last year.
According to data provided by the New Jersey State Police and the Camden County Police Department, which handles law enforcement issues in the City of Camden, overall violent crime is up nearly 14 percent when compared to 2015. Worse yet, the number of homicides during the first six months of 2016 nearly equaled the total number of homicides in all of 2015.
In addition to a substantial rise in murders in Camden NJ so far this year, there has also been a notable increase in the number of sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, and auto thefts throughout the city.
By contrast to the sharp rise in violent crimes throughout Camden, there has been a similarly steep decline in non-violent crimes such as burglary and larceny. Moreover, while armed robberies are up by almost 20 percent this year, the total number of thefts has decreased – another indication that law enforcement may be cracking down on non-violent crime while not necessarily doing enough to stop violent crimes in Camden, New Jersey.
In response to criticism of the Camden County Police Department, Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr. noted that the recent numbers on crime in Camden NJ do not account for “a steep decrease in crime” throughout the area in the past month. Cappelli also made a point to highlight the fact that the overall crime rate in Camden, which includes both violent crimes and non-violent crimes, is approximately two percent lower “than it was this time last year.
