Police Arrest Suspect in Camden, NJ Homicide
A Camden NJ man who allegedly shot and killed a young girl who was riding her bike on a city street has been captured by law enforcement.
According to authorities, the suspect fatally shot an eight-year-old girl in August 2016. The victim was riding her bicycle near her family’s house when the suspect allegedly used a handgun to fire multiple shots in her direction. The young victim was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her life.
While law enforcement searched for the suspect, they reportedly encountered resistance from two people with ties to the suspect. As a result, the suspect’s mother, a 35-year-old Camden woman, and a female acquaintance of the suspect from Sicklerville, have both been charged with hindering apprehension.
The suspect was eventually tracked down in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he was allegedly hiding out at the home of a relative. On September 23, local police in Clarksville picked up the suspect on a fugitive warrant.
After being arrested, the suspect was held on a massive $250K bail amount at a jail in Montgomery County, Tennessee. He is currently awaiting extradition back to Camden County, NJ, where he will face first degree murder charges.
The suspect is an 18-year-old resident of Camden, New Jersey. He could end up spending the rest of his life behind bars. That’s because the NJ Criminal Code treats murder as the most serious offense a person can commit. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, a person who knowingly or purposely causes death can potentially be sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years.
It is believed by Camden detectives that the shooting may have been gang related, which could factor into any punishment handed down in the event of a conviction.
