Hoboken Man Accused of Falsely Reporting Robbery of His Employer’s Messenger Bike

Anyone who is thinking about stealing their boss’ messenger bike might want to think again. The Hoboken Police Department recently arrested a purported victim of a robbery just eight days after receiving a report of an assault and robbery of an expensive messenger bike. After reviewing video footage which revealed that the supposed victim was actually the last person to have possession of the bike, police determined that the robbery claim was likely fake. New Jersey criminal defense attorney Jill R. Cohen keeps a keen eye on constitutional violations by the police in cases like this because they can ultimately be an important part of the criminal defense for the accused.

On September 26, 2018, the suspect in the Hoboken bike robbery reportedly told police that he was in the area of the Ninth Street light rail station when he was accosted by two men who grabbed him by the neck and threw him from his work bicycle, which is owned by his employer and valued at $1,000 to $1,500, according to Hoboken Detective Sgt. Joseph Leonard. The two thieves allegedly fled with the bike, leaving the suspect dazed and confused.

Detective Leonard said that he became suspicious of the accused when the facts of the robbery became inconsistent and a witness told police that they saw someone take the bike into a building on Fifth Street. A review of video footage revealed that only the accused was seen with the bike prior to the alleged robbery, Leonard said, noting that there is no evidence of the robbery as reported.

Severe Penalties for Robbery in Hoboken, New Jersey

The accused in this case now faces up to 6½ years in prison and up to $25,000 in fines and restitution. Police did not specify the suspect’s job or where he works.

“When individuals make false reports of violent crimes, like robbery, that did not occur and it is done purposely to mask their own illegal or inappropriate conduct, they need to be charged,” Hoboken Police Chief Kenneth Ferrante said. “False reports of violent crimes create public panic, social media reactions that could be damaging to the city, and waste hours of law enforcement investigative resources trying to track incidents that never occurred.”
