Vanderbilt Football Player Convicted of Rape
A high-profile rape case recently ended with the Brandon Vandenburg, a former Vanderbilt University football player, being found guilty on the most serious criminal charges.
Brandon Vandenburg was a student and football player at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. His rape case has garnered national news coverage because of the salacious details. According to prosecutors in the case, Vandenburg orchestrated the brutal gang rape of his girlfriend in his college dorm room.
Vandenburg reportedly gave his girlfriend alcohol on the night of the rape. After she passed out, Vandenburg allegedly handed out condoms to three other Vanderbilt football players and videotaped as the men sexually assaulted the victim.
Now it appears that Vandenburg will be spending significant time in prison. At the conclusion of the criminal trial, the jury deliberated for just four hours and ultimately returned a verdict of guilty on multiple counts related to the rape. Vandenburg was specifically found guilty of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery. He was also found guilty of unlawful photography for violating the rape victim’s privacy by taking the illicit video images.
This was actually the second time that Vandenburg has been convicted in the rape case. In 2015, a jury convicted both Vandenburg and one of the other defendants, Corey Batey, of sexual assault. However, the jury’s verdicts were thrown out when it was revealed that one of the jurors had failed to disclose the fact that he was a past victim of rape.
When Brandon Vandenburg returns to court for formal sentencing, it is possible that he could be sentenced to a term of incarceration of 25 years. The media will no doubt be paying close attention to the sentencing, especially in light of the controversial sentence that was recently handed down to a Stanford University rapist.
