Domestic Violence Cases in NJ on the Rise
According to the National Coalition to End Domestic Violence, New Jersey continues to face a growing number of domestic violence cases each year. A recent case underscores the importance of getting legal help against a violent partner as soon as possible.
Five months ago, a New Jersey woman was murdered at home a month after domestic violence charges against her husband were dismissed. The court dismissed a claim that the woman’s husband broken into her home and assaulted her.
Although the woman, age 35, was successful in obtaining a protective order against her estranged spouse and filed divorce proceedings, troubles escalated. The woman wanted to move out-of-state to be closer to her family, but a New Jersey judge ruled against her. That decision seems to have caused tragedy. Friends of the woman said that the estranged husband broke in and beat her. She was afraid and wanted to get away from the man. The woman was found dead by her son from numerous stab wounds to her body, neck, and face. Her estranged husband was charged with murder.
