South Jersey Child Support Sweep Nets 83 Suspects

South Jersey law enforcement recently arrested 83 people during a massive child support sweep in Gloucester County, Camden County, Salem County, and Burlington County.
Members of the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office executed the operation over a period of three days in different counties, with multiple South Jersey police departments providing assistance as authorities apprehended dozens of so-called “deadbeat dads.” Arrests were made in Beverly, Browns Mills, Burlington City, Camden, Clayton, Delran, Deptford, East Greenwich, Edgewater Park, Elmer, Franklin, Gibbstown, Glassboro, Gloucester City, Gloucester Township, Hainesport, Harrison, Lumberton, Mantua, Maple Shade, Medford, Monroe, Mount Holly, National Park, Palmyra, Paulsboro, Pitman, Pittsgrove, Sicklerville, Tabernacle, Washington, Wenonah, West Deptford, Westville, Willingboro, Woodbury, and Woolwich.
Ultimately, authorities arrested a total of 83 people in the operation and charged them with child support violation. According to Gloucester County officials, the suspects owed more than $3 million in back child support. Thus far, approximately $26,000 has been collected as a result of the law enforcement operation.
Most of the suspects who paid at least some part of what they reportedly owed in child support were released on their own recognizances with pending court dates, while the other suspects were remanded to the Salem County Correctional Facility in Woodstown, New Jersey. All of the suspects will have to answer the criminal charges in court and could face jail time if they are convicted.
Gloucester County Sheriff Carmel Morina issued a statement about the sweep and said that law enforcement takes very seriously the matter of delinquent child support because the victims are children and often depend on the financial support for survival. Morina said that the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office works with local police departments across South Jersey “to seek out fugitives of the law” and to “do several child support sweeps a year in hopes of collecting monies due for children.”
